Wedding Nerves: Best Approach To Dealing With Wedding Jitters

As Spring approaches and we head into wedding season, here at Will Williams we’ve decided to put our heads together to give advice for brides (and grooms!) on how to beat wedding nerves in the joyful yet undeniably nerve-racking run up to the big day.

Lots of brides-to-be have a picture of what waking up on their wedding morning is going to be like. Sun streaming through the window, an exquisite dress hanging up and ready to be worn, and a bubble of excitement in their chest. But no matter how perfect the picture, people also know that it’s almost inevitable that – along with all the happiness and anticipation – they are going to be racked with wedding nerves.

Fortunately, there’s ways to deal stress and anxiety, even when they are hitting panic-inducing levels. Whether you experience social anxiety or shyness and are nervous about being the centre of attention, you are worried about everything going to plan, or are just suffering from good old-fashioned wedding day jitters, these tips should help see you through.

Meditate

It would be a great idea to start meditating in the months before your wedding, as it will help you combat stress and stay well rested – even in the face of monumental organisational efforts. But even if you have never meditated before, a beginner can still feel the benefits. Meditation has been shown to reduce the activity of the amygdala, which is the stress centre in your brain.

When you get stressed this part of the brain goes into overdrive and releases stress hormones into your system, disrupting the body’s normal functioning and preparing it for “flight or flight”. Meditation calms you down and lessens the fear and nerves you may be feeling. It also bolsters your confidence, leaving you more than ready to walk down the aisle is style.

Lay Out Everything You Need the Night Before

Nothing is more guaranteed to make a person incandescent with stress than being unable to find something vital when they absolutely have to be somewhere at a certain time. To make sure this doesn’t happen, take everything you need and neatly lay it out somewhere obvious. Having everything accounted for, in sight and ready to be collected up at a moments notice, will add to your peace of mind.

Display a Ticked Off To-Do List

Even if you haven’t been keeping a to-do list throughout your wedding planning, write down the main things that you have sorted out over the last few months and years, tick them off, and stick this up on your wall. This is a great way to remind yourself of all you have achieved, while reinforcing in your mind that there is absolutely nothing left to do and you are free simply to enjoy the day.

Designate a Last-Minute Planner

Your soon to be mother-in-law’s car has broken down? The couple before you have overrun at the registry office? Some of the table ornaments are missing? This, on your wedding day, is not your problem. Assign your most organised bridesmaid or family member (the sort of person that thrives on this kind of thing – you want to make sure they still enjoy themselves, after all!) to tackle any last minute problems, so all you have to do is concentrate on having fun.

Dance it Out

If your feeling jittery and tense on the morning of your wedding, heading out for a run before everything kicks off could be a good way to take the edge off. But if you’re already in your dress, make up and hair all in place, and glass of bubbly in hand, dance out your wedding nerves with your bridesmaids. Putting on your favourite songs, the kind you usually reserve for preparing for a big night out, and belting them out with your best friends is an easy way to help you feel brilliant.

Ultimately, the thing to remember is no matter how nervous you are, there’s very little short of a hurricane that can ruin the fact you are marrying the person you love, and that even the little hitches will be looked on fondly as you embark on what is bound to be one of the best days of your life.
